How lottery taxes work

Winnings are taxable income. For prizes over $5,000, the IRS withholds 24% up front, but large jackpots are ultimately taxed at the top federal rate of 37% — which is what we estimate for seven-figure wins. Your state may also tax winnings: some (California, Florida, Texas, Washington and a few others) take nothing, while others withhold up to about 11%. City/local taxes can apply on top.

For the jackpot you choose between a lump sum (a smaller amount now — roughly half the headline number) and an annuity (the full amount paid over ~30 years). This is an estimate to help you compare; confirm exact figures with the lottery and a tax professional. Got a ticket? Check it here.
